Volunteers make the difference!

Friends of McAllister Park and our community partners host several ongoing volunteer opportunities in the park. Read below to see how you can join us to protect and preserve McAllister Park.

Litter Pickups

Litter pickups are a fun way to make a big impact on the beauty and overall enjoyment of McAllister Park! The Friends of McAllister Park hosts a monthly litter pickup. We also partner with other organizations and community groups.

Is your group looking to do community service?  We can assist by supplying all the needed equipment for an easy and successful litter pickup in the park! Contact us for more info.

Invasive Johnson Grass Removal

Johnson grass is an invasive weed. Where Johnson grass takes over, native grasses and wildflowers die off. This reduces food and nectar sources for native insects and pollinators and eventually reduces the amount of native birds in the park too.

This project works to preserve and restore plant and animal diversity in McAllister Park. Naturalists, community and corporate groups, and students join us for this important program. Ages 10 or above welcome.

Volunteer with YOMP!

Youth of McAllister Park (YOMP!) is geared towards young people of middle to high school age who love, respect, and value the natural world, take joy in outdoor activities, and believe both purposes can exist side by side and enrich one another.

YOMP! members learn about the natural world at McAllister Park and participate in volunteer activities to nurture the park’s appearance. The work of YOMP! ensures McAllister Park will be a popular destination for their generation and generations to come.

Natural Surface Trail Maintenance

The natural surface trails at McAllister Park are a special feature loved and enjoyed by all. With over 15 miles of official natural surface trails, there is a lot to do to repair erosion, remove fallen trees and branches, trim overgrowth, and restore social trails to natural habitat.

The South Texas Off Road Mountain Bikers (STORM) hosts periodic trail workdays to keep trails safe and sustainable. Visit their website to learn more on how you can get involved in trail maintenance at McAllister Park.

Fest of Tails Kite and Dog Festival

The annual Fest of Tails, a family-friendly kite and dog festival, is hosted by the San Antonio Parks Foundation (SAPF) and is the largest event in McAllister Park every year.

You can expect skies full of kites, pooch parades and more! The festival takes place in early spring and volunteers are needed to assist SAPF with various event logistics to make this event a success.
