McAllister Park officially opened on April 13, 1968. It was originally named the Northeast Preserve and was renamed in honor of former San Antonio mayor Walter W. McAllister in June of 1974.
The purchase of the original 713 acres of land was made possible using 1964 bond funds and a federal grant under the Housing Act of 1961. An additional117 acres was added in 1974 for a Natural Resource Conservation Service dam completed in 2003. The park grew by another 130 acres in 2000, through a joint use agreement with the San Antonio Aviation Department.
For nearly 6 decades, McAllister Park has provided a natural refuge for San Antonio.
